The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Information and Technology (OIT) actively recruits individuals who excel in delivering technologies and services to improve the Veteran experience. Recently, two technology all-stars joined VA to help OIT achieve its vision to become a world-class IT organization that provides a seamless, unified Veteran experience using state-of-the-art technology.
Paul Brubaker, Deputy Chief Information Officer, Account Management Office
Paul Brubaker joins OIT as the new Deputy Chief Information Officer for OIT’s Account Management Office. In this role, Mr. Brubaker leads efforts focused on tying IT investments directly to strategic objectives, such as improving customer service, one of Secretary Robert Wilkie’s priorities. Before joining OIT, he led operational, research, cybersecurity, and strategic initiatives at the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“I am so proud to be working for the VA while OIT undergoes such enormous digital transformations in support of VA’s mission,” he says. “Our vision, mission, and plans are clear. By working hand in hand with our customers (Veterans Benefits Administration, Veterans Health Administration, and the National Cemetery Administration) we know the value of collaborative problem solving and a customer-first mindset. We must also continue to hire and retain top talent who have empathy and passion for serving Veterans. To me there’s really no higher calling than to ensure that we make good on Abraham Lincoln’s promise to care for the Veterans and their families who’ve done everything possible to preserve our union and our freedoms.”
Todd Simpson, Deputy Assistant Secretary for DevSecOps
Todd Simpson was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for DevSecOps in May 2020 after nearly three decades in the federal government in strategic planning, organizational development, and operational efficiency. He served as the first Chief Product Officer at the Department of Health and Human Services and as the Chief Information Officer at the Food and Drug Administration where he focused on cloud migration, agile methodologies, and mobile technology. For VA, he is leading interoperability initiatives for VA’s electronic health record and guiding OIT’s transition to Product Line Management and other DevSecOps principles and practices.
“I am delighted to join VA to lead modernization efforts in support of our Veterans,” he says. “I’m very impressed by the level of DevSecOps maturity in our organization and our team’s dedication to continuous learning, not just to improve our own skillsets, but to help us better serve our customers and Veterans, too. The caliber of people, the solid technology in place, the stability of the end user computing platform, the sophisticated ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) practices—all are much further along than at many other federal agencies. It’s exciting to join a team with this degree of progress already under its belt. I’m seeing firsthand that this is an incredible environment for innovation and a historic time for VA. I’ve never had the opportunity to serve my fellow Veterans in such a capacity — it’s an honor. I am proud to lead you on this journey and look forward to sharing my vision in the coming weeks and months.”
