At the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), thousands of staff members, area managers and leaders have a singular goal in mind: consistently providing Veterans and their families the services and programs they have earned, particularly healthcare and other benefits urgently needed during the COVID19 health emergency.

For two VA Area Managers, their experiences as Black women Veterans also informs their commitment to proactive leadership that best serves all workers, VA partners, and their fellow Veterans.

Angela Williams, Area Manager of several Veteran clinics, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (VAMC), and a VBA facility in greater-Houston, routinely draws on lessons learned during her own 32 years of active military service to help ground her decision-making. “Trust me — Veterans are near and dear to my heart,” Ms. Williams said. “The values that hit home for me are definitely accountability and taking responsibility for things that we care most about.”

Similarly, Area Manager Georgia David describes the importance of combining technical skills and knowledge with purposeful “soft-skills” people management, and how doing so drives her leadership of the VA facilities she oversees in Philadelphia. “I am a veteran, and I feel connected to the people I see here at the VA,” Ms. David said. Human-centered design and our culture of unity drive our strategic deployment of digital and IT tools across VA. Ms. Williams and Ms. David exemplify the solid work ethics expressed by all Area Managers who prioritize a distinctly personal approach. Thoughtfully, intentionally working on team building and fostering a workplace culture of unity are key ingredients to overcoming challenges and meeting Veterans’ needs.

For Ms. Williams and Ms. David, the consistent application of highly responsive techniques and empathetic leadership within VAMCs and other facilities plays an essential role in ensuring that Veterans experience timely, high-quality service delivery. In some instances, Area Managers like Ms. Williams and Ms. David also are Veterans. They make it a point to draw on their own active-duty experiences to better inform their understanding of both their facilities partners, their workforce, and the Veterans they serve.
