Health technology has rapidly evolved to meet the changing needs of government agencies, health care providers, and patients during the pandemic. Many of these innovations, such as telemedicine, virtual reality training, and streamlined user experiences, are here to stay. However, there is still work to be done to realize the full potential of health IT. At the heart of this innovation, and its challenges, is data. When properly managed, data-powered AI can fuel faster research, interoperable electronic health records can improve patient experiences and health outcomes, and big data can better predict public health outbreaks. But data governance, cybersecurity, resilience and interoperability remain challenging. How can government agencies harness data to not only realize what’s possible today, but innovate health technology for tomorrow? What steps is the government taking to protect patient privacy along the way?
