Stat!Ref is a virtual collection of reference books that include a variety of differing medical fields. Treated as a-la-carte, the subscriber is able to choose which medical reference books fit the needs of the specific site/subscriber. Stat!Ref enables users to cross-search full-text titles, journals, and evidence-based point-of-care authoritative resources instantly. Ultimately, this tool replaces paper books and moves to an electronic setting in order to access quickly and research efficiently for patient care needs. Additionally, these reference books are able to be downloaded for continuous research and viewing.

How we use Stat!Ref at VA

Stat!Ref is a virtual library in which VA employees at a specific site have access to reference books in varying medical fields to assist in patient care and research purposes. Treated as a-la-carte, the subscriber from the VA site is able to choose which medical reference books fit the needs of that specific site/subscriber. Stat!Ref enables users to cross-search full-text titles, journals, and evidence-based point-of-care authoritative resources instantly. This tool is view only but reference books are able to be downloaded for continuous viewing by VA employees.

“In 2024 – 2025, Stat!Ref was used for 516 hours. There were 635 sessions where 3,985 searches were conducted. From the searches, 4033 articles were retrieved. If we had to purchase the articles from the publishers, the charge is $75 per article. Specialty journal articles cost as much as $95. Using $75 as the cost per article saved the hospital $302,475. The staff was able to provide world class care to our Veterans during their 110,000 visits.”
