Veterans have earned the right to buy a home with no down payment and competitive interest rates. Making sure they can use that benefit depends on lenders staying in the VA home loan market. To keep lenders in this market, VA is making its processes easier.
Mortgage lenders want to offer VA-backed loans. Veterans are a large customer base, and the government backing is attractive. But working with VA has historically meant friction. VA must audit lender loans to protect Veterans and taxpayers, and that process was burdensome: manual work, large file transfers, and repeated back-and-forth with VA staff. That burden could discourage lender participation, and fewer lenders means fewer Veterans accessing benefits they have earned.
VA fixed that. VA’s Loan Review Application Programming Interface (API) gives lenders a secure digital connection to VA’s system, turning a day-long manual process into a single click. By reducing the administrative burden of loan audits, VA has made it easier for partners to remain in the VA loan market and keeping that market working for Veterans.
Better communication between lenders and VA supports VA home loans, making it easier for Veterans to access the favorable terms they’ve earned, including low interest rates and no down payment.
A Smarter, Simpler Solution: The Loan Review API
In the past, the audit process was time-consuming and frustrating for lenders and left room for errors, potentially slowing every step along the process. Lenders had to:
- Download multiple documents
- Combine them into a single PDF
- Manually upload the file to VA’s portal
The new Loan Review API allows lenders to submit loan audit files with a single click, freeing up time and resources to better serve Veterans. What once took days, now takes hours. The API:
- Works with existing lender systems. Lender loan files go directly to VA from lenders’ own systems, with no separate portal required. Preferred by lenders since they can send directly from their own systems.
- Eliminates manual uploads. Lenders securely connect their loan systems to VA using standard protocols, removing the need to download, combine, and manually upload dozens of documents one by one to VA’s system, as they did in the past. The one-click change makes it less resource-intensive and time-consuming for lenders to submit audit documents to VA.
- Catches errors before they cause delays. The API flags missing or incorrect information instantly and provides instant feedback, resulting in fewer rejected submissions that require cumbersome follow-ups.
- Protects Veterans’ data. All data is encrypted and meets federal cybersecurity standards. Lenders and VA both need to comply with cybersecurity standards.
- Speeds up VA audit processing. Submissions arrive in a clean, structured format, allowing VA staff to complete audit reviews faster so lenders can continue to offer various VA-backed loan options for Veterans.
In FY25, VA backed nearly 468,000 mortgages worth $181 billion, helping nearly half a million Veterans secure a home and establish stability after service. Protecting and growing lender participation in this market starts with making the compliance process less burdensome.
In addition to streamlining the mortgage audit process, the API helps ensure compliance with federal regulations and VA policies. The API was a joint venture of VA’s Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and the Office of Information and Technology (OIT).
Onboarding Progress
VA released its Loan Review API on the VA Developer Portal, enabling lenders and their vendors to access, code, test, and implement the new tool. VA automated onboarding and established a dedicated developer support team. In just over one year, VA was able to retire the manual upload process entirely. More than 500 lenders and 46 loan origination systems have already made the switch to the new API.
Looking Ahead
The Loan Review API is just the beginning. With this foundation in place, VA is now focusing on building more APIs to modernize the home loan process and the entire VA loan lifecycle, all part of VA’s broader commitment to delivering exceptional, Veteran-centered service.
