Dr. Donald “Chuck” Kowalewski is the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) for the Electronic Health Record Modernization Integration Office (EHRM-IO).
The Office of the Chief Medical Informatics Officer combines knowledge of patient care, technical understanding of medical software, and patient safety to inform the development of the Federal Electronic Health Record and related clinical information systems. Prior to becoming CMIO for EHRM-IO, Dr. Kowalewski co-led the Solution Expert team and served as Orlando VAMC’s CMIO. Dr. Kowalewski joined VA as a U.S. Air Force colonel, where he served in roles including Chief Medical Consultant to the Surgeon General, acting Air Force CMIO, Chief of Staff, Clinical Instructor, and Critical Care Air Transport Leader. He deployed in three operations and was awarded Air Force Air Medal and Air Force Aerial Achievement medals.
He is married with three grown children and continues to serve Veterans clinically in internal medicine and critical care. His avocations include general aviation, amateur radio, and software architecture. He has accumulated fluency in multiple software languages, with interest in massive databases.
