About Electronic Health Records Modernization
The Office of Electronic Health Record Modernization was established in 2018 after VA awarded Cerner Corp. a contract to replace its current electronic health record (EHR) system with the same commercial, off-the-shelf solution already being deployed by the Department of Defense (DOD) and U.S. Coast Guard.
Named the Electronic Health Record Modernization Integration Office in Dec. 2021, the office oversees VA’s EHRM program, which is a crucial piece of the department’s larger effort to transform the way it delivers health care.
About VA EHRM Integration Office Leaders
VA is committed to providing seamless care for Veterans, including access to a comprehensive EHR. On June 5, 2017, VA announced its decision to replace its current EHR system, the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), with a new federal EHR based on the same commercial, off-the-shelf Cerner Millennium platform also being deployed by DOD.
- When fully implemented, the federal EHR will benefit more than 9 million Veterans and their qualified family members.
- The federal EHR will transform health care for Veterans by allowing VA clinicians, staff and participating community partners to see a Veteran’s full medical history in one location without the need to track down clinical information from other VA or community providers.
- VA has been a leader in health care technology since developing VistA over 40 years ago. With EHRM, VA will create the largest EHR in the country, further building the department’s Veteran-centric approach to supporting seamless care.
- EHRM will transition VA from more than 130 instances of VistA to a single federal EHR shared by VA, DOD, the United States Coast Guard (USCG), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and participating community care providers, serving as a catalyst for nationwide interoperability.
